Hits, loops, counter-hits, flicks, and smashes were met by pushes, chops, blocks, and lobs during the 2nd SSHS Table Tennis Invitational Championships held last Saturday and Sunday, January 31 - February 1, 2015 at the Stephenian Hall of St. Stephen’s High School.

St. Stephen’s High School (SSHS) hosted the friendly competition which was organized by the St. Stephen’s High School Alumni Association (SSHSAA).

The event started with an opening ceremony where Pastor Edwin Lim delivered the Invocation. SSHS Assistant Principal Ms. Josie Tacus gave the Welcome Remarks. The players, coaches, and umpires took their Oath of Sportsmanship before SSHSAA Executive Vice President Tita Rose Tan who administered it. Then SSHSAA President Mario Sy conveyed short remarks and declaration addressed to the players, coaches, sports officials, teachers, and fellow alumni. SSHSAA Secretary Ms. Lu San Sey Ching acted as master of the ceremony.

 

The 2nd SSHS Table Tennis Invitational Championships officially kicked off when our SSHSAA President Mr. Mario Sy and SSHS Directress Ms. Marianne Tan took their stance across each other on the pingpong table and delivered the ceremonial serve.

 

 

The Table Tennis Association of the Philippines (TATAP) was commissioned by SSHSAA to oversee the conduct of the tournament making sure it was in accord to international standards. Referees, deputy referees, recorders, and umpires were all from TATAP.

The events and their respective formats held during the competition were:

 

  • Event 1                 Elementary Boys’ Team                                Group Round Robin
  • Event 2                 Elementary Girls’ Team                                Group Round Robin
  • Event 3                 Alumni Mixed Team                                     Knock Out System (2-stage)
  • Event 4                 High-School Girls’ Team Open                     Knock Out System (2-stage)
  • Event 5                 High-School Boys’ Team Open                     Knock Out System (2-stage)

Students from fourteen (14) schools and alumni teams from nine (9) schools took part in the friendly invitational championships which started at 8:30 in the morning and came to a close late at 11:00 in the evening.

The student teams composed of young, aspiring, and promising table tennis players were from the following schools:

  5. St Jude Catholic School
  6. St Peter the Apostle School
  7. National University
  8. University of Sto Tomas

  11. San Beda College – Rizal
  12. St Paul College – Pasig
  13. Tomas Del Rosario Academy
  14. St. Stephen’s High School

while the Alumni Teams who took time off from their busy schedules were from the:

  4. St Jude Catholic School
  5. Philippine Cultural College
  6. Northern Rizal York Lin School
  7. Tiong Se Academy
  8. St Stephen’s High School
  9. Philippine Buddha Care Academy

In the Elementary Boys’ Team (Event 1), it was Aaron See, Denis Chua and Jeremy Ng of the St. Jude Catholic School – Team A who bested players from the other four (4) participating teams. While in the Elementary Girls’ Team (Event 2), it was Kristine Obeles and Kheith Rhynne Cruz of the Paco Citizen Academy Foundation – Cherry Mobile Team who outmatched players from the other two participating teams.

In the Alumni Mixed Team (Event 3), it was the alumni from Philippine Cultural College Team A composed of Jackson Que, Jayson Tan, and Alywin Sysim who took the title match from their fellow alumni (Philippine Cultural College Team B).

On the other end, in the HS-Girls’ Team Open (Event 4) it was Jannah Romero, Kim Lapitan, and Marybeth Obeles of Paco Citizen Academy Foundation – Cherry Mobile Team A who outstroked players from the St. Stephen’s High School Team A in the finals. While in the HS-Boys Team Open (Event 5), it was Ryann Jurado, Jann Nayre, and Kian Bolado of  San Beda College – Rizal Team B who grabbed the finals from De La Salle – Zobel Team A.

The event was featured in PTV 4 Sports last Monday February 2, 2015. Chinoy TV will feature it soon.
